$50, 4 GB of RAM, and VirtualBox
by admin on Feb.05, 2012, under FreeBSD
One very practical aspect of 64-bit capable machines and operating systems is the ability to run multiple OSes at the same time. This is a quick demonstration of using my VM software of choice, VirtualBox (available for FREE at www.virtualbox.org) for running multiple OSes on your Mac. For an in-depth look at VirtualBox, view my earlier video here www.youtube.com Desktop wallpaper from Flickr User Bachian: www.flickr.com (Creative Commons, Some rights reserved)

this guy is awful smug about apple. no the market does not follow apple. sorry, they didn’t invent or have a part in the ddr# standards nor the 802.11x stuff. then, since the 68k nor now, when there is little difference an expensive mac or a pos dell. ok maybe firewire? but serious, who the fuck uses that anymore aside from kid touchers and people in San Francisco .

Huge mistake: “One very practical aspect of 64-bit capable machines and operating systems is the ability to run multiple OSes at the same time.” Virtualization has nothing to do with 64 bits!!

This idiot doesn’t know what he’s talking about @ 1:00. Apple uses a very thin and backward hardware selection, renames common pc accessories, and makes people pay twice as much. The PC and mac use the same hardware. Apple simply makes people pay (much) more for it.

OWC is the best for memory and stuff like that.

because when apps run, they require a set amount of space to store data temporarily. the hard can be used but it is much slower that a random access memory (ram). thats why you need ram. without it, your computer would be DOG slow. hope this helped =)

more ram = useful for cgi development.

i got a question
why dose RAM and memory even exsist why cant you just run any good on any comp without those requirements
?

I’m using a gateway with 64 bit pushed through 16 gb + of general ram, and multi access hard drive, it allows for sd card’s etc. up to 150 gb of fairly quick transfer, (per transfer slot), It still seems slow.

I don’t think Autocad or any other graphics intensive program is going to run good in virtualization… I suggest to use Bootcamp if you’re going to use Autocad. As for assigning the memory, you have to set it up yourself, but by default it uses 512MB of RAM.

My XP VBox is only 256 and my FLP is 192. Still pretty fast.

Hello, i’m hoping to upgrade my memory/ RAM to 4GB, and also install windows vista.
I need to run multiple software/ applications simultaneously. These include 3ds max, autocad- which are Ony windows compatible. I was hoping to run these alongside mac applications using say VM Fusion.
After an upgrade, would the computer automatically assign equal memory/ RAM usage or does activity monitor have an option/ function for manually controlling memory/ RAM usage. Thanks loads

Good stuff to know. Thanks.

I ended up just getting the the memory from Apple. Between the cost of aftermarket DDR3 and shipping…I would have saved less than $10. Even though I drive a 4 banger…$10 doesnt fill my tank!

I tried installing Ubuntu on a Mac, and if you do it without anything special (just installing it like you would Windows) it won’t work, and the bit of space you partitioned for Ubuntu will be lost unless you reinstall OS X. So unless you tweak some settings, don’t do it.

Hey man I was looking at the newegg page and I noticed that some of the more expensive ram (corsair, crucial) which sold for maybe 5 or 10 dollars more than Transcend, had free shipping. I’m not sure if that applies for Hawaii, but maybe you should look at that?

Just how I like it
. Personally I couldn’t stand the Windows “Luna” interface that debuted with Windows XP in 2001, and on all my systems I always switch the theme back to Windows Classic ASAP.
