Why are There So Many Linux Distros?
by admin on Feb.04, 2012, under Linux
twitter.com – facebook.com – chris.pirillo.com – Over at Lockergnome.net, Luke asked where there are so many different Linux distros. Linux is awesome, there’s no doubt about it. The beauty of Linux is that it is open-source, and anyone can change it how they see fit. You can take Linux as an operating system, give it different themes and choices and generally make it to your liking. Some people want certain choices and features, while others want something entirely different. This is why you’ll find so many different flavors of Linux. http – lockergnome.net

I have a pimple in my ear?
Can linux remove it because its painful?

No. I’ve never met you, but I am not a geek for the simple matter that I’m completely in the dark about most of this stuff. This guy, on the other hand, probably knows every single computer terminology in the book. That, is the difference.

@xFUCKxYOURxMOTHERx Well you must be too (and for that matter, me too) if you’re on a YT vid called “Why are There So Many Linux Distros?”, lol.

@edualbus i wish more people knew this

“Linux” is not an “operating system” as Chris said. Linux is only the kernel. The operating system is “GNU/Linux”
February 5th, 2012 on 3:56 am
@edualbus if you told that to someone who doesn’t know about computers, they would be like “riiiight, linux is only for programmers”.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it.
February 5th, 2012 on 4:21 am
@pcfreak1992 you should read more. GNU+Linux is based on Unix, but it isn’t Unix.
February 5th, 2012 on 4:57 am
@edualbus I’m not sure, but isn’t Unix the kernel and Linux the OS?

@invnd1245 if we did, we’d end up like the computer illiterates.
February 5th, 2012 on 6:49 am
I call anything with the Linux kernel Linux (which also includes Google Chrome OS, Android, and Kindel)
February 5th, 2012 on 7:05 am
@yofootball127 so you know one command? lame.
February 5th, 2012 on 7:18 am
@edualbus yeah but who cares
February 5th, 2012 on 7:19 am
bahhhhh Chris. Check out my channel
February 5th, 2012 on 7:45 am
linux is the kernel!
February 5th, 2012 on 8:00 am
For everyone who is saying “Linux is not the operating system”… Chris is saying that it is one for the purpose of this video without getting too technical. It’s easier to say that it’s an operating system.
February 5th, 2012 on 8:10 am
So much misinformation in this video.
February 5th, 2012 on 8:46 am
Linux is not an operating system.
