I can do the same with my 1st generation i7 740QM processor
January 29th, 2012 on 12:15 pm
is your laptop fan very noisy? or hot?
January 29th, 2012 on 12:34 pm
“like it” for boob, modern warfare and strong GPU
January 29th, 2012 on 1:29 pm
why the hell would anyone want to multi task a demanding game and stuff on a labtop? best to leave that for a overclocked gaming rig

@MrWWEThemeSongs1V2
It´s possible, but not easy…
January 29th, 2012 on 3:03 pm
Windows looks soo awfull…

@AntDX316 its like keeping the condom on after having sex
January 29th, 2012 on 4:48 pm
I don’t understand why people choose to keep the film protecting the plastic on their stuff, the whole point is to make it look new when u take it out of the box not protect it from being handled all the time

@MrWWEThemeSongs1V2
Nah, each laptop is designed for a certain amount of power and everything, laptops are mostly not upgradable.

i have an hp pavilion g6, and i want to replace a 2nd generation intel core i5-2410M with 2nd generation intel core i7 2820QM,
IS IT POSSIBLE? PLZ REPLAY!!
January 29th, 2012 on 6:43 pm
@samastrike that’s actuall intel’s TurboBoost monitor. it has a green leaf that tells you when you’re in power-saving mode, and the bar on the left moves up and down, changing colour when the CPU overclocks itself. quite a handy little tool actually, really useful if you also have the CoreTemp gadget running alongside it.

(continued) see the way i make sense of the info that was given to me, the GT555 would use up all of its other resources on most modern games long before even using up 1.5gb, so 1.5 gb is perfect…and so 3GB would serve no actual benefit. like chucking in 8GB of system RAM if you’re only going to use the PC for music and video playing
it wouldn’t improve the performance any considerable amount, and is therefore just there to sell the product. that’s what i’m trying to say
January 29th, 2012 on 8:16 pm
@Usul573 that’s what i’m hoping
oh and the 3GB is apparently just a gimmick that manufacturers request nVidia make to make people think it’s more powerful than the 1.5gb version. my desktop’s gtx480 barely uses up all of its 1.5GB of RAM before it’s at maximum computing potential.. so the idea of a tiny notebook card using all 3GB of its allocated gRAM while running full-spec games at HD+ res is insane
if that makes sense..
here in Aus, it’s the XPS17′s only GPU choice given by dell.

@BrEnNo1023
Still not sure on 3GB, I seriously doubt anymore than 1GB is needed for 1600×900, but whatever.
More ram the better all around I guess.
The GT 540M is capable of some pretty serious 1600×900 gaming also, so the GT 555M should be great.
January 29th, 2012 on 9:12 pm
@Usul573 aha, just got off a forum with someone saying that with 3GB of RAM in the gt555 it allows the GPU to work less because it has more RAM. that might be where the power savings come in, as well as its optimus tech of course.. only speculating with my limited knowledge though
It seems like a good card, and since i only have the 1600×900 res screen, all i’ll need for quite some time i think. LCD’s viewing angles are what i’m really worried about. it’s pretty bad on the previous model D:
January 29th, 2012 on 10:10 pm
@Usul573 I’ve looked around and the gt555 on nvidia’s site only actually normally has 1gb of gddr5…maybe its a marketing gimmick from dell, or maybe it’s been modified to share some of the system RAM. I’m pretty sure even 2 gt555s wouldn’t be able to perform on multi-monitor setups at such high res
its nowhere near as powerful as the 485 or even the 460 available thru alienware or sager etc. So I’m assuming its just clever marketing. *shrugs*.As for 8gb of ram, it’s futureproofing i spose

@BrEnNo1023
I’m good for now as this as my basic laptop though. It has some life left in it, it’ll look like a handicapped cow compared to an Ivy Bridge CPU and Ivy Bridge IGP though. I also wonder how much 6GBs or more of memory helps.
What’s with the 3GBs of memory on the GT 555M by the way? I feel that anything more than 1GB of video memory is pointless unless you’re doing massive 2560×1600 gaming or multi-monitor gaming.
January 29th, 2012 on 11:20 pm
@Usul573 wow Ivy Bridge? first i’ve heard of it. they’re already getting stuck into a new architecture? 22nm and DX11 graphics. sounds cool.
I’m not sure how the battery life will go on the XPS, but the model with the GT555 has a great big 9 cell battery to cope with the 1080p & 3D (i left out those two options though), so it should be good for a couple extra hours of unplugged gaming.
Dell has a pretty good Sandy lineup if you’re looking to upgrade. I wouldn’t go near alienware, though

@BrEnNo1023
Sounds like a great system then, the 2720qm looks like it’s not much slower, still in the top 15 for mobile processors looks like. My C2D P8600 at 2.4 GHz, 9400M G and 4 GBs of DDR3 memory is getting a bit old.
Sounds like Ivy Bridge plans to bring more quad core processors to good prices.
I wonder how the battery life will be on that laptop, graphics should be switchable then? Looks like the battery life can be great on a sandy bridge laptop.
January 29th, 2012 on 11:59 pm
@Usul573 i ended up getting a Dell XPS 17 with a 2720qm, 8gb RAM, 3gb GT555m
the 720 was only a few frames per second slower than the 820 on most games (and on CPU PassMark it was only a few hundred points difference, and the 820 would have cost me $300 more from both dell and Sager. i can live without the extra 2mb cache
can’t wait till they send it
January 30th, 2012 on 12:23 am
@BrEnNo1023
It’s a complete beast of a processor. IGP is getting to be good too.
January 30th, 2012 on 12:56 am
What gadget were you running in the top right corner?
