Virtual Box + Centos 6?
by admin on Dec.11, 2011, under Linux
I want to learn Linux / Unix in a context of making websites (LAMP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript). Also some system administration, so I know what I am doing when I get some hosting. Is Centos 6 a good direction here? Thank you.

Yes, Centos is a very common distro for VPS’s.

CentOS is is indeed a good robust distro to try out. But actually any distro will do the trick for you. The trick is the setting up that is required. If you have a spare computer that you can run this server on, then this would be one way of doing things but not necessarily the easiest and quickest to set up.
The quickest setup is using XAMPP; this packages all the functions all set up ready to serve a hosting solution within a few steps.
What I have done is to use PuppyLinux a lightweight distro that boots of a USB, then install XAMPP on it. This makes an instant server of any computer that I plug my stick into…someone has done this for you
and it is called webserver puppy (see below), and boots off a CD
