I need instructions on Deploying Windows XP using windows deployment services in Windows Server 2003 SP2.?

by on Nov.19, 2011, under Windows

In researching, it looks like i need some files from the Vista and Windows Server 2008 CD. Is this true? Im really trying to use RIS, but that is not an option when you have Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2 SP2. Please help.

    Hi,

You can deploy Windows XP using RIS even with Windows Server 2003 R2 installed. Even though RIS was replaced with WDS, it still allows you to deploy legacy packages with RIS. Look under ‘Start > Programs > Administrative Tools’ you should see ‘Windows Deployment Services Legacy’. When you run this, it runs the old RIS setup, allowing you to ‘Add New Image’ or ‘Perform Diagnostic Check’. You should put your Windows XP CD in the drive, then select the ‘Add New Image’ option, press next, then in the path enter x:\i386 (where x is your cd rom drive letter). RIS will then add your legacy image.

You only need the Vista/Win2008 boot image files if you plan on actually using WDS. This files are used when you select the WDS boot option just after the PXE/F12 boot. You go into the WDS mini setup, where you capture or deploy an image. It runs a bit like WinPE, where it is a cut down light weight version of the real OS
