What’s better, an intel core i7 or the dual and quad core processors they have out?

I’ll be in the market for a new computer soon and was wondering Which processor would be better. I’ll be using the computer for gaming and watching TV so I’d like the best performance possible.

Go with the i7.
I would personally stick to core 2 duo instead of quad cores.
Spend your money in the Video Card(s).

Core i7 is awesome ( i have one on order) if you can stretch your budget get the extreme version, it outclasses the others

Core i7, at the same clockspeed of the current processors (Core2Duo, Core2Quad) will be faster and more efficient.
Gaming? Look for a good video card too. Nvidia and ATI have some great stuff right now at down-right-bargain prices since they’re so cutthroat right now. (Don’t we just love that!)
Check out CNET.com and read their reviews. The information there is priceless. My advice is to buy a high speed Core 2 Duo (+3.0GHz) and pair it up with a 9800 GTX+. You’ll get GREAT performance per dollar.
If money’s no issue, you’ll get better performance in the long haul with a Core i7 and a GTX 280 (Nvidia).
@4th hokage:
You don’t know what you’re talking about. Your Core i7 IS WITHOUT A DOUBT a quad-core processor, all current Core i7s are. The name Core i7 is just a moniker for a significant architechural change that Intel has phased in.

My wallet feels better with a Phenom II….and i am sure your Wallet would feel better with a Core2 Quad or Core2 Duo…but the Core i7 is technically a superior processor.

huh what? let me tell you how it is. on paper the i7 is vastly superior to anything out there. in the real world there isnt a program that will use the full extent of a quad core or even the duo core. seriously. save your money and spend it on video cards and ram upgrades

intel core i7 is better

The older quad-cores and dual-cores are good solutions for someone on a budget. You can’t really budget that well with an i7 setup since the CPU and motherboard will set you back at least $300.
i7′s socket is supposedly getting phased out, so that will hinder future upgradeability.
Performance wise, i7 is better with its new architecture. Though it’s costly to adopt this enthusiast line.
Wait for Core i5/i3 to hit mainstream and then compare. I’m on a Q9550 and it is more than enough for the next few years.
