They want someone to spit in their food.

They want to feel great when they’re not…I know, it’s pathetic!

People like to be waited on, and the tendency can be to use the brief opportunity to raise yourself up above whoever is doing the serving.
Take it with a grain of salt. Laugh, smile, and focus on the nice ones.

It’s human nature to remember the one jackass customer who was challenging and didn’t make you any money.
However, you’ll never change the nature of the job.
So my best advice is to focus on the polite and appreciative customers.
If you feel the need to focus on a specific customer, remember the one who tipped you MORE than was customary.
There are many of us, from time to time, who really show a service provider how much we truly appreciate them but we NEVER hear about that here on Yahoo Answers….it’s all about the negative. In fact, some people who try to be courteous and generous with servers find it a real turn-off when WE never get a thank you and all we hear about is how crappy the customers are.
If you prefer to focus on the negative, so be it. Your choice. But you won’t be the happier or healthier for it and you won’t be helping your profession any.

I hear you on that which is why I don’t like working in the Customer Service / Retail industry. People expect a lot and are willing to give little in return. Courtesy is rapidly becoming taboo as the masses believe just because they can walk erect they have some air of entitlement.
Try not to focus on them. I usually rant about them when I would get home from work in order to get it out of my system and then move on. People like that aren’t worth any further time, effort, or energy.

That comes with the territory in a service environment. You should be glad you are a server and not a nurse.

Because they have no class and no manners and they take out their frustrations on someone vulnerable who cannot fight back. I had that happen many times and I just smiled at them and ignored their rudeness. But I always had more good customers than bad and I always made a ton of money, every day, so that helped. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the fact they are miserable unhappy low class people and you never have to see them again.

Because they have money and you don’t.

Cos they are idiots and jackas$es. I used to get people like that all the time when I worked in GAMESTOP, If they were nice enough people, I’d give a little extra effort, but if they were just plain rude, I’d not bother myself. I remember once when I was doing the weekly re-pricing of all the games, I had them all behind the counter and was about to increase the price of a particular one by about $5, and a couple came in and asked for it, and the price (the old price was still on it), I explained to them the new price and they started complaining, and spouting concumer actes at me (which I knew, and had a perfectly legal counter argument for them, that the offer could be withdrawn at any time, which was now, and by me). They started giving me abuse, atating they worked in retail and knew the law, so then I said they should also be aware of what I had just said. They were morons, and asked for my boss, did the same to him, took both our names, and tried reporting us. Basically, don’t let them bother you, hard to do at times, but not worth your job if your boss doesn’t see your side of things.

ALL jobs have their pitfalls. Servers sometimes have rude customers.
On the bright side, servers don’t pay as much in taxes as the rest of us! You guys get to pay 9% of gross sales as your taxable tip income, but most servers average 15% or more! So think of that when you have an occasional bad guy that you are screwing everyone else when it comes time to pay the tax man!
Like another person said, we only seem to hear about the servers problems, yet we know we aren’t that way, most of our friends aren’t that way, and we seldom see problems when we’re out eating, but we certainly do hear complaints almost hourly in this forum about how mistreated servers are. It gets old.
